The Covid-19 National Coordination Commission was set up on March 25 with no terms of reference, no register of conflicts of interest, and even less divulged about its financial resources. Stacked with executives from the gas and mining lobbies it is turning out to be a bonanza for multinationals and yet another destructive blow to Australia’s efforts to curb global warming.
A recently leaked Covid-19 Commission report calls for Australian taxpayers to underwrite gas industry expansion. The report does not consider alternatives to gas, or mention climate change and the financial risk of investing in fossil fuel as emissions are cut.
